They say the thermal-protection on the left wing mafunctioned. After that, the heat went to the rest of te ship, going to the wheel and such. I don't think aliens had anything to do with this...

The shuttle was about 22 years old, anyway. I think it was due to happen sooner or later. With all of the missions and possible metal-erosion in the atmosphere, i think the shuttle should have been retired. I have the feeling after this, there is going to be a type of law stating shuttles should not be used over the age of 17...

I think it was due to our own ignorance that machines DO fade over time that the shuttle was destroyed, not any alien presence.
