TAPE REVIEW: RF VIDEO Presents Best of Lionheart: Chris Jericho

Chris Jericho vs. Chris Benoit…WAR
The first ever meeting between the two in the 1995 Super J Cup tournament hosted by Tenryu’s WAR federation and it’s a classic, 1994 winner Chris Benoit takes on a young brash Chris Jericho (Who hypes and interacts with the crowd a bunch yelling “COME ON BABY!” a lot and of course dropping some obscenities along the way. As for the results of the match, they are great for a first time meeting Benoit’s skill is on display Jericho raw talent and potential is shown he’s a bit more sloppy and erratic back then but I guess you can attribute that to inexperience, Spot of the match for me had to be the cocky pin and flex classic Jericho. Jericho’s stock rises after this match as he started to get noticed by bigger feds. A classic match that Benoit wins. 8.5/10

Jericho & Jushin Liger & Gran Naniwa & Dr. Wagner Jr. vs. Shinjiro Ohtani & Tatsuhito Takiawa & Yoshihiro Tajiri & Hanzo Nakajima…NJ
A Fun 8 man tag match from WAR and it’s a bit of a spot fest but still a good match with some of my favourite’s in there Ohtani, Jericho, Liger, a Raw Takiawa, and a green Tajiri all the guys pull off some hot spots in this one, Being it’s an 8 man it’s all over the place ends with Liger going over Takiawa SPOT OF THE MATCH: Too many to pick one a fun match all around 8/10

Jericho vs. Sabu…. ECW (Fan Cam)
An old school ECW match between Jericho and Sabu, it’s good to see Sabu back before all the bumps really started taking their toll, I still respect the guy even though he’s lost a step because every week he still is out on the Indy scene doing his classic spots through tables. Abu wins with the Triple Jump Moonsault. SPOT OF THE MATCH is a superplex that Jericho delivers on Sabu but his own head hammers hard on the mat 7/10

A Bunch of Thrill Seeker/Heavenly Bodies Promos from their angle in SMW, a nice little add in to show Jericho’s natural charisma and showing his mic skills develop.

Thrillseekers (Jericho & Lance Storm) vs. Heavenly Bodies…SMW
A Blood bath Jericho blades big in this one and wrestled with a broken arm, The match is at first stopped due to Jericho’s blood loss but after the Thrillseekers plead it’s restarted and a Dusty Finish occurs as the Thrillseekers win the belts leaving the Heavenly Bodies and Jim Cornette fuming. SPOT OF THE MATCH: Jericho’s blade job! 8/10

Jericho vs. 2 Cold Scorpio…. ECW
Scorpio is always one of those guys that I felt wasted his talent as he was a solid wrestler, this was when he was still in shape and him and Jericho put on a pretty good display like most early Jericho matches the pace was quicker a bit riskier and naturally a bit sloppier, they both to seemed to get tired and the match started to regress as it went Scorpio went over doing a shooting star press that got very little elevation. SPOT OF THE MATCH: Scorpio showing us that you can do SSP’s in slow motion 6.5/10

Jericho vs. Masao Orihara….WAR
A Short match that was clipped finally a match on this tape where Jericho wins via Lionsault.
6/10 for the parts I saw. SPOT OF THE MATCH: Some Guy that hurricanrana’s Orihara into a table.

Thrillseekers SMW video The video package looks dated now, but the music especially some interesting spots are shown highlighting the work of two of WWE’s stars today back when they used to be younger and more risk taking.

Jericho vs. Ultimo Dragon….WAR
This match is a bit clipped but what is left is some great footage, some solid transitions and near falls finish comes with Jericho reversing a roll up for the win. SPOT OF THE MATCH: The picturesque Ultimo Dragon Moonsault 8/10

Jericho vs. Damian 666….ECW
A good quick match between two guys I quite enjoy, some nice lucha spots, and the finish came with Jericho pinning Damian off a Tiger Suplex. SPOT OF THE MATCH: Damien reverses a cross corner whip and hits an elbow and then a BRONCOBUSTER.!7/10

Jericho vs. Gedo….WAR
A solid match between Jericho and Gedo, this is when Gedo was still a bit portly and had that gay ass outfit and look (half cut shirts on men are a faux pas!) Nonetheless this match had some good drama and the crowd was into it with a lots of near falls after big spots Jericho did a halo drop and a bad twisting splash, but through it all Gedo came up the winner in this one (Blown) SPOT OF THE MATCH: Jericho’s botched Spinning Splash attempt 7.5/10

Jericho vs. Rob Van Dam….ECW
A Match between two of RAW’s biggest and most HHH jobbed stars, back in ECW a fan cam match that had some good drama and of course spots. RVD does a somersault flip attack on Jericho from the security rail into the crowd, Jericho takes a monkey flip bump right onto a chair RVD takes a Hurricanrana reversal after attempting a powerbomb on to the aforementioned chair. Fans are chanting for Sabu in this match because RVD was a heel and feuding with Sabu….my have times have changed. Was nice to see a HEEL RVD who doesn’t play to the crowd between ever spot he did. Finish came off as a little bit of a let down as RVD does a jumping sidekick from the top rope for a pin, a move he uses now to set up the five star frog splash SPOT OF THE MATCH: Jericho’s Springboard Dropkick that RVD bumps hard for outside onto the floor 8/10

Jericho vs. Konnan vs. Bam Bam Bigelow
I’m not a real fan of Triple Threats unless they have three great workers building a story. Example being the often-mentioned ROH debut show main event. This match is another handheld camera match from I don’t know where this match is from maybe a WCW house show you can hear a lot of Spanish being spoken but the announcer was American, shrugs whatever, Konan is billed as the WCW US Champ and the Mexican Heavyweight champ and is over in a big way. The match is all right but its shot on a fan cam pretty far in the crowd far way and it’s a bit shaky with people getting in the way, Konan wins this one. SPOT OF THE MATCH: This average yawner ending. 3/10

Jericho & Damian 666 vs. Dragon & Yuji Yasuraoka…WAR
Promos by both teams start this one off before they get to the ring, this match is clipped in parts but shows some nice spots by All parties with Yasuraoka taken the brunt of the bumps. After Jericho and Damian get crossed signals Ultimo Pins Damian with the La Magistral cradle for the win. SPOT OF THE MATCH: Damian doing his stealing of Japanese Star spots by yelling their name then doing the spot i.e. Tenryu, Chosu, Jinsei he probably did more (Like in the War J Cup) but this was clipped 7.5/10

Jericho & Van Dam vs. Eliminators….ECW
Saturn and Jericho start if off and they do some usual opening sequences, RVD and Kronus get in and do some chain wrestling as well wow. I hear some boring chants and some boos in this one from a tough crowd. Eliminators hit their usual spots. Jericho and RVD hit some usual moves like the enziguri, the five star frog splash, and a splash off the top a lionsault blah blah blah. Ends with the Total Elimination, the poor camera, and dark look in the building hurt my enjoyment of this. SPOT OF THE MATCH The sequence of moves before the 5 star frog splash. and of course * Joey Styles voice *
“TOTAL ELIMINATIONNNNN!!!!!” 6/10

Jericho vs. Pit Bull 2….ECW
A Greco roman knuckle lock to start or if you want the old school review the test of strength/mercy fight. A decent match that is taken away bit by the run-ins by Pitbull 1 and Shane Douglas to further the Douglas/PB2/Francine angle, Jericho wins here and earns the ECW Television Title in the process. SPOT OF THE MATCH: Pitbull #2 Military Pressing Jericho into a tombstone piledriver SICK! 7/10

Jericho & Liger & Juventud Guerrera & Gedo vs. Lance Storm & Rey Misterio Jr. & Ultimo Dragon & Yuji Yasuraoka…WAR
Another Fun match filled with spots, it’s clipped in parts but what’s left is great seeing different variations such as Rey vs. Liger, Storm vs. Liger, Juvi vs. Rey, Rey vs. Jericho, Jericho vs. Storm, Ultimo against anyone! etc. etc. SPOT OF THE MATCH: Another great spot fest type match too many to pick one. 8.5/10

Jericho vs. Dragon…WAR.
A hot match! That the Crowd is going wild for with lots of near falls. RF has the guy Jericho wrestling as Dragon not sure who it is but he has the Mexican flag colours for his trunks and a Dragon kid type mask, none the less it was a hot match to end this tape that had Jericho going over with a butterfly suplex from the top rope. SPOT OF THE MATCH: Dragon missing a sky twister press after having 4 rotations. 8/10

OVERALL Thoughts on the Tape: A Great tape if you are a Chris Jericho Fan, but nothing that blows you away that would make you want to get this tape if you weren’t a fan already. The high points in this tape are the 8 Man Tags which Jericho isn’t the really a big part of, and the Benoit Match which you can find elsewhere on the awesome War Super J Cup 1995 tape (You Gedo Haters aside give him a chance average move set or not although his gimmick and look of this era is horrid. besides who wouldn’t look bad on a tape that has a solid Rey vs. Psicosis match, and a classic Liger vs. Ultimo Dragon match but we digress……) this one had some duds and a bit too much clipping in a few matches I was enjoying i.e. the 8 Man Tags and the Matches with Orihara, and Damian. Some match selections were questionable like the Scorpio and the 3 way with K-Dawg and Bam Bam. That aside I enjoyed this tape although it wasn’t the best tape around though I would give it a recommendation for you Jericho fans OVERALL ENJOYMENT GRADE 6.3/10 I’m a bigger Jericho mark than others and if we take that away I guess that this is a pretty fair assessment of the quality of this tape if you had to buy from say RF himself. (which I don’t recommend you do.)Bottomline: You are a fan of "Lion Heart" Chris Jericho than get this tape, and if you aren't this isn't the best place to start.
