Just like with drinking or sex, puritanism is a social perril. You cannot save people from themselves. I think most drugs should be legal and the proceeds taxed so programs can be funded for treatment.

But there is too much money in keeping drugs illegal, so I doubt it will happen.

By the way, I read that Afganistan is going to have a bumper crop of poppy this year, with the Taliban ousted.

That's what treatment is - saving people from their own addictions/habits. We also need to increase educational programs. Maybe have some recovering addicts speak at all schools. People who have been there can sometimes talk other people out of starting.
