I saw a wonderful exhibit at the Corcoran art gallery last week. If it tours, I highly recommended it. It's devoted to Jackie Kennedy's support for the arts here in Washington and to her wonderful efforts for historic preservation. Before Jackie, incoming administrations could throw out anything in the White House they didn't like and even valuable antiques were sometimes discarded. She pushed JFK and congress to get a law passed that required that anything incoming Presidents didn't want in the White House had to go to the Smithsonian for preservation.
Perhaps more importantly, she also saved Lafayette Square and the buildings in it. This is so close to where I work and it's incredible to think they were going to tear down the Dolly Madison House, the Decatur House, the Federal Circuit court(all wonderful old buildings) and replace them with (ugh) early 60s style buildings. They were also going to remove Laffayette park itself, where demonstrations are usually held, and she managed to save the park.
The exhibit also deals with her successful oversees tours.
It's very well done and I highly recommend it, if it goes national, as it might.
