Roenick handed one-game suspension

TORONTO (CP-AP) - Philadelphia Flyers forward Jeremy Roenick was handed a one-game suspension Wednesday for his meltdown the previous night when he threw a water bottle at referee Blaine Angus during a 6-2 loss to Buffalo.

Roenick had been tossed from the game with six minutes to go after receiving gross misconduct and unsportsmanlike penalties.

He lambasted the NHL following the game and was still heated on Wednesday.

``They (the NHL) still refuse to expose the referees,'' he said. ``Granted, they might not get playoff games at the end of the year or their bonus money, but still, that is not enough motivation to get these guys to wake up and call the games the way they should be called.''

Roenick, 33, has a reputation in the NHL for being outspoken, but he reached new heights on Tuesday. His face was a fearsome sight of scars, bruises and blood following the game.

``Wake up, NHL, wake up,'' he snapped ``I'm bleeding like a stuck pig. It's ridiculous.''

Roenick took a high stick early in the game from a teammate and then another from a Sabre in the third period.

Angus told Roenick he did not see the third-period infraction, which caused Roenick to erupt. His mouth bloodied, Roenick threw a water bottle across the ice at Angus and was ejected.

Roenick called the officiating ``terrible, absolutely terrible. Blaine Angus did an absolutely terrible job.''

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman wasn't going to stand for that.

``There are certain acts that don't cause injury and don't have serious repercussions . . . but you have to make clear to the world it's not conduct that you're going to tolerate,'' he said Wednesday during an interview on the Fan 590, a Toronto all-sports radio station.

Bettman did admit that Angus made a mistake.

``The referee clearly missed the call here,'' he said. ``But there's a lot going on on the ice, the referee may have been looking at something else and missed it. But we do tell the referees is that you're not supposed to guess.''

Bettman, who said Roenick's bloody lip wasn't enough evidence for Angus to call a penalty, admitted that there's a ``human element'' to the game, but added that the league doesn't tolerate incompetence.

``One of the great strengths of our game is that it's emotional,'' he said. ``Suppressing that emotion is a very fine line to walk. Obviously, we've got to start with the premise that we wish our referees would get every call right all of the time but unfortunately they don't.''

Roenick, who will forfeit $91,463.41 US in salary, will miss Friday's game against Toronto.

It's been a rough week for Roenick and the Flyers, who are 0-4-1-1 in their last six games.

Roenick, from Boston, took a puck in the cheek last week when an errant slapshot during practice struck his face and cut him for several stitches.

On Monday, the forward complained about coach Ken Hitchcock's treatment of the players, but also admitted they deserved for their play of late.

``He's a son of a bitch right now,'' Roenick told ESPN2. ``He's no fun right now. He's a pain in the ass. But anybody in their right mind who is coaching a team that is sputtering like we are right now would be a pain in the ass.

``I don't think it would be fair to us as a team to let it go on without saying anything. That is not fair to the organization, that's not fair to the city. We have to not worry about what he is saying about us. We have to concentrate on getting our game back and not worry about him treating us like a bunch of dogs, because we are playing like a bunch of dogs.''
