Subject: request for advice....

I'd like to ask for advice on how anyone here would handle this situation. I happen to do a lot of volunteer work for a community based not-for-profit. I won't go into specifics, but we're pretty well known in the area and have a great reputation. A well-meaning individual gave me the home address of a former hockey player that he obtained through business contact that they had, something that I'm SURE the player thought was supposed to be held in high confidentiality. My friend gave me the address, thinking that I could use it to ask the player to help out with the NFP.

I'm now stuck in a moral dilemma. The address was obtained, for all intents and purposes, illegally. I don't doubt that if I made some sort of contact with him, he'd want to know how I got his home address. Then I'd have quite a bit of explaining to do to cover my friends ass, but not appear to be a stalker myself. But on the other hand, this person is known for being very involved in the community, so it's killing me to have an "in" that I'm too afraid to use, because I think he might be willing to work with us.

I'm not really sure what the best course of action is. I haven't told anyone else involved with the NFP that I have the address, because I don't want to be pressured into making a decision that I'll regret. But do you think something like an introductory letter with a brochure included would be overstepping my bounds? Or should I just forget that I ever got the address? I realize that it's not just me that I need to worry about... if this turns out ugly, it's the reputation of the NFP I represent.

I appreciate any thoughts on this! :o)
