I am new to this website and was shocked to see how many people have been effected by this sick individual. I feel horrible for anyone that has come in contact with Maria. She is an amazing con artist. I know two NHL players who's lives have been turned upside-down because of her antics. Apparently, she finds out where the guys are staying while on the road. She will call their hotels, she will sometimes meet them through e-mail, and as shocking as it may seem, she will actually get their cell phone #'s. In the case of my two friends, she claimed to be a model. She said that she had homes in Toronto, LA, and Miami. She told them that she was friends with Fred Durst, and other various entertainers. You would not believe how well she can manipulate these guys. With the first guy, she would call and e-mail him saying that she wanted to meet up in New York. Every time he would call her on it, something would come up and she could not make it. Most of the time the excuse was a modeling shoot. This went on for a couple months and his girlfriend found out when she came across an email from Maria. She was devastated that this was all going on and ended up contacting Maria, who called herself Krista at the time. She wanted to know if her boyfriend had been cheating on her, so she thought she would go straight to "Krista", thinking that she would find out the truth. Maria told her some of the most painful untrue things about the guy she had been in love with since high school. The hockey world is not an easy world for these girls to live in. Some of these relationships began before these guys ever became well known. And in many situations these girls are scared by men that don't understand the word "no" and by the girls who are throwing themselves at these guys knowing that they will bite. Let's face it, guys are stupid when it comes to sex. Anyway, this situation broke them up at a horrible time in both their lives. The two of them had been dealing with deaths in the family and so on. A year has gone by, and now she is coming to realize that none of these stories were true. Just like many athletes, he has not been an angel, but in this situation, he was just curious about this person that she claimed to be. She even sent pictures of an old Playboy playmate in LA, claiming that it was her. What guy wouldn't be curious? These guys are growing up in a world where they get anything they want. Why would it be so far fetched to think that a playmate would be interested in them? This actually is not the worst of the two stories. The second guy was contacted in his hotel room while playing in New York. She asked for a different person when he answered the phone. He said he didn't know anyone by that name and hung up. She called back and started in with the "you sound cute, what do you look like" routine. She claimed to be the exact same model that she used before, but now her modeling name was Stacia and her real name was Maria. She e-mailed him the same picture she sent to the first guy. That night a girl, that resembled the girl in the picture, met him at a club in NY. I think he said it was called The China Room?!? I have never been there, so I could be wrong about the name. He had no clue that these were two totally different people. To this day, we are still unsure if the girl he met at the club was in on this whole conspiracy. We have yet to find out who she was, because she never showed up again. Their phone relationship lasted for a period of 7 months. I know this is hard to believe but it is the God's honest truth. After about 4 months of daily and nightly phone conversations that would last hours, she came up with some story about how she needed him to spot her $7,000 because she was in a lawsuit with her modeling agency and they froze her accounts. She needed the checks to be made payable to her mother because her bank would not let her cash them. She said it would only be a couple months before the lawsuit would be settled and she could pay him back. He actually sent her two checks totaling $7,000 to an address in Miami. At the end of the season, he was so excited to finally spend time with her. He wanted to surprise her so he jumped on a flight and showed up at the door of the house he sent the checks to. The door opened, and he asked for Maria. Maria answered the door and said that she was her cousin and that Maria wasn't home. He knew something wasn't right because he had just got off the phone with Maria making sure she was going to be there for the surprise. He kept drilling her with questions, and Maria finally admitted that she was pretending to be someone else the entire 7 months. The next day he went back to her house to have her sign a letter stating that she would pay him back the money. They went into the house to get a pen and he followed her into a room where she had her computer. He was shocked to see a shrine of hockey players. He said there were pictures covering the walls of various players. It was something out of a psycho stalking movie. He saw her mom in the house but Maria begged him not to say anything to her. She promised that she would return the money. She still has not paid him back, but continues to leave threatening v-mail messages on his cell phone. He has now contacted a local sheriff, and an attorney. Both have been collecting information and evidence, but it has been very difficult to track her down as she keeps changing her cell phone number and is not at that same address. Just recently, I know that she has received notice from the law office stating that they are going to put her mother in jail, as it was her mother's name the checks were made payable to. I will keep you all posted as to what happens. I apologize for the novel, but I think this woman is mental and needs help. I feel sorry for her. But I especially feel sorry for the people who come in contact with her.
I, like many of you, am blown away by the fact that this women has not been thrown in jail yet. Through the past couple months I have contacted the NHLPA and they have now warned all the players about her in their meetings.
