I just thought this was a touching article:

Crash hits Eakins hard

By KEN WIEBE -- Winnipeg Sun

This was not the news Dallas Eakins wanted to wake up to.

The clock read 6:15 a.m. and the original plan was for him and wife Ingrid Kavelaars to take a brisk stroll with their chocolate lab near their Vancouver home.

But when he heard his wife screaming into her cell phone, Eakins knew those plans would be on hold.

"My initial reaction was that something was wrong with her family," said Eakins, who joined his Manitoba Moose teammates yesterday. "Then she said 'Dan's been in a bad, bad accident.'"

When he brushed aside his grogginess, Eakins turned on the TV to see pictures of the horrific accident Dany Heatley and Dan Snyder of the Atlanta Thrashers had been in on Monday night.

'DEAR FRIEND'

"For myself and my wife, I don't know if we've really slept the last few nights," said Eakins, who played with Snyder the past two seasons with the Chicago Wolves of the AHL. "It's a double hit for us. Dan Snyder is a dear friend of mine and one of my wife's dearest friends (Lisa Rontundi) has been dating Dan for the last six months."

Eakins has been in contact with Rontundi, who is in Atlanta, four or five times a day for an update on the situation.

Kavelaars, who is an actor, plans to head to Atlanta this weekend to lend her support.

"As much trouble as (Snyder) is in right now, he's lucky to be in that amount of trouble -- things could have gone very bad the other way," said Eakins. "At least all of the little things have been very positive. It's tough for us but the thing I can't get out of my head is (Snyder) laying there like that."

And in the blink of an eye, hockey becomes secondary.

"It's really a roller-coaster ride, I don't know whether to cry or to throw the computer across the room," said Eakins. "I've experienced tragedy in my life. I lost my mom and I lost my dear friend Roger Neilson this summer. It's amazing how in a split second like that, so much pain is brought across the board. For his parents, for his brother, everyone. Everyone is thinking about the guy."

Eakins' thoughts also go out to Heatley, who was lucky to end up with only a minor concussion and a broken jaw but will now have to deal with some serious mental toll, not to mention legal action.

"Those guys are like Frick and Frack, they were the best of friends and were like long-lost brothers," said Eakins. "For Heatley to be laying in a bed, knowing that his driving actions have put his friend in this predicament ... I can't imagine what he is feeling right now."

The recent developments have led Eakins to take stock of the things that are important to him.

"There was an extra-long hug (with Ingrid when he left for Winnipeg) and a real appreciation for what we have in our lives," said Eakins, who is finding solace at the rink and was looking forward to tonight's exhibition game with the Toronto Roadrunners. "Now we cross our fingers and hope for the best."
