Roy hanging it up
By Adrian Dater, Denver Post Sports Writer

After 18 seasons in the NHL, four Stanley Cups and a slew of goaltending records, Patrick Roy has decided to call it quits.

Roy will formally announce his retirement from the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday, a team official said today.

Roy, 37, flew to Denver today. Previously, he said he would take the coming week to think further on whether or not to return for another season and would not make any announcement before the end of the Stanley Cup Finals.

But he apparently changed his mind. Roy leaves the game with a record 551 victories. He won a record three Conn Smythe Trophies.

Roy is basing his decision on a belief that he does not have the same passion for the game he's always had, and that he should step down.

Roy's departure creates a huge void for the Avalanche in goal. The team might pursue a new starter via the free agent market, with goalies such as Felix Potvin and Chris Osgood available. Or, they could try and make a trade for a veteran, such as Phoenix's Sean Burke.

Or, the Avs could go with what they have now. Backup David Aebischer could vie for the starting job with rookie prospect Phil Sauve, the son of Roy's agent, Bob Sauve.
