Subject: The Beat at the Big Chill

Hi, I've been sorting out my photos and video clips from last week and had to tell someone about how brilliant The Beat were at Big Chill on Sunday. A group of friends and I go to this festival every year but this was the one of my all-time highlights, and an unexpected one too.

I always was a huge fan of The Beat (and the other Two Tone groups) in the 70s and 80s and I insisted on dragging my friends to see them play. Most of them were sceptical to say the least but by the end of the 3rd or 4th track there were skanking away with me like good 'uns!

The whole experience was made loads better by the fact that I was born in Rowley Regis and lived in Kidderminster for the first 18 years of my life, so both the venue and the music seemed local - and I was so proud to be able to share both with mates from my adopted home of Liverpool.

It sounds awful but I had simply forgotten what absolute classic pop tunes most of the big hits were - as well as being great party anthems. Best Friend and Save it for later in particular are right up there with Burt Baccarach in my opinion. I also loved the way that the tone of the gig was pitched - a real happy festival vibe but with just a hint of seriousness about recent events and also in memory of Joe Strummer, and then combining the two with Rock The Casbah!

From the reaction of the crowd around us, it was clear that this was a massive success and I hope the group get asked back next year. Big Chill have included a "comedy" act on the line-up for the last few years like The Wurzels and Chas 'n' Dave and I think some people thought The Beat fitted into this category, but how wrong they were!
