Nah, if I was reviewing a friends band I'd be honest and say if I thought it was shit, I wouldn't be much of a friend otherwise now would I? However, I would make a point of talking to said friend about it prior to publishing said review.

Having said that, I think it's perfectly possible to give a band constructive criticism through a review (or to their face) without resorting to slagging off. Plus to be fair, I don't think there are any really bad bands from Hull likely to be reviewed on here, although sometimes they do play bad sets and - usually - are aware of this.
