there's nowt wrong with making money off gigs, but i sincerely believe that at the level we're talking about, it should be done for love not money. putting on small bands at the adelphi is never gonna make a living, and most of the bands i'm talking about work full time as well and are more than happy to play for food and a floor to sleep on, so any money for them is a bonus! and let's be honest, people are far more likely to risk seeing some bands they don't know if it's 2 or 3 quid than if it's 6 or 7. when you start getting into more serious promoting and stuff, and bands start needing guarantees and the like, that's when non profit starts being unviable.

perhaps bad religion was a bad example, but i could've said rancid, or nofx, or alkaline trio, or pretty much any band of that kind of popularity.
