The man who started the fight clenched his bleeding wrist in his other hand and a peasant woman knelt next to him and wrapped it with an old strip of cloth she was going to use to wrap fish. The crowd gasped as one and started to back off. A couple of young boys ran down one street to call the Guard. More peasants ran off, not really wanting to deal with a monster, but double the number that ran off came and surrounded it, marvelling. A few moments later the clatter of horses could be heard approaching the crowd.

The fisherfolk parted for two of the Guard on horseback to enter the cleared circle around the beast. They wore shining armor, dark blue tabards with an emblem of a sailing ship on it, and each one had a broad sword. "What is the meaning of..." the first one started, but then he looked closely at the monster. "What in the nine hells are you! Speak up, or we shall have to arrest you!" he said, pointing his sword at Raith. He talked a lot braver than he felt, not having ever seen a being such as Raith. That was the kind of monsters that mothers told their young children when they wanted them to stay in for the night, he never thought they'd be real.
