Date Posted:22:16:01 03/21/07 Wed Author:Dave Mueller Subject: Volunteers needed for USA Wildwater Trials
The 2007 USA Canoe & Kayak Wildwater Senior Team trials will occur on the weekend of April 13 to 15 on the Lower Yough in Ohiopyle. The team will represent the USA at the 2007 World Cup events in Europe later this year.
I will be coordinating the volunteers for the event. We need safety boaters and people to work on land. Non-boaters will be needed for check-in, directions, boat inspections etc. I found out yesterday that the race organizers don't have anywhere near the number of people required. I need a few safety boaters for both days, but almost 20 people on land each day. Safety boaters must be experienced IV+ and hopefully have had some rescue training. Paddling with your friends is one thing, providing safety for a public event steps up the responsibility. Throw ropes will be required, but will hopefully remain unused.
The schedule is not final yet, but here is what I know so far:
Friday afternoon: Racer registration begins at 3PM, so we'll need a few people during the day. The volunteers are scheduled to meet race officials at 4PM to get assignments, I'm sure we can get that moved later if necessary.
Saturday: Start at 8AM, finish by Noon. The Saturday race is a short sprint from above Entrance to below Cucumber. Boats will launch one at a time. I need between 4 and 6 boaters in the water.
Sunday: Start at 7:30AM, finish by Noon(ish). This race is from above Dimple to the Bruner Run take-out. I will need 6 to 8 boaters, placed at the major rapids, especially at Dimple and River's End.
Race organizers are working with the USACE to control water levels that weekend, but Mother Nature may change our plans. The Casselman is the backup river, I don't know what the cutoff level is on the LY.
If you can volunteer, please contact me via phone 412-334-6256 or email dmueller@verizon.net
Thanks,
Dave Mueller
