Subject: Help our River Conservation Efforts

Hi river friends,

West Virginia Rivers Coalition has put together another great river raffle to benefit clean water and river protection throughout West Virginia. This year’s ticket has over 60 prizes and our top prizes are a boat of your choice from Rocky Mountain Kayak or a Fluid kayak from Upper Yough Outfitters!

If you don’t receive a call from one of our volunteers this November, please go to www.wvrivers.org for your chance to win great boating prizes and to support the protection of the rivers you boat.

If you’re not familiar with our organization or you’re wondering what we have been up to, here is some information about West Virginia Rivers Coalition and the work we do:

The West Virginia Rivers Coalition (WVRC) was founded in 1989 by a collection of wide-ranging interest groups - anglers, boaters, hikers, local residents - who were troubled by what was happening to West Virginia’s wild rivers. Dredging, abandoned mine drainage, reckless development, clear-cut logging, coal mining, and dams were exacting heavy tolls on the rivers they loved.

Today, WVRC’s mission remains the same and the organization has gained the energy, support, and credibility to become the voice for river issues in West Virginia. We have grown to over 3,000 individual members and are supported by over 30 paddling based clubs and groups.

This summer WVRC won a legal challenge against the company PPG that spews 34 pounds of mercury into the Ohio River each month. WVRC continued our educational workshops for watershed groups, engineers and consultants providing training on wastewater treatment, storm water runoff and acid mine drainage. We also expanded our efforts with the creation of Potomac Water Watch an organization created through partners working to get to the bottom of the fish kills in the Potomac watershed.

Besides all the hot topics we are working on, WVRC is also a member of the West Virginia Water Gaging Council and our Executive Director is the chair of the council. WVRC runs the Gauley River boat shuttle at Mason’s Branch during Gauley season so boaters don’t have to carry their boat up Panther Mountain. We also support efforts to protect the New River environment from the pressure of development and has provided comment and scientific expertise on wastewater treatment related to the development proposals.

This fall WVRC will be busy working to protect trout streams through the state legislature while industry lobbies to undermine water quality standards for West Virginia’s rivers. Meanwhile WVRC will collaborate with scientists and agency personnel to determine the source of the Potomac’s “intersex” problem. We will start to restore the health of the Potomac River through partnership with the Potomac Water Watch.

We have a busy fall, another busy year ahead of us and a lot at stake. Supporting our raffle is a simple way to support our coalition and our efforts. The benefit for you is clean water and a chance to win some great prizes! This fall donate to our river raffle by responding when a friendly volunteer calls you or go to www.wvrivers.org.

Thank you,

Joe Peabody
Development Director
West Virginia Rivers Coalition
