Subject: I'll try to get things started...

Up until 2 months ago, I had 4 female gerbils- two in one cage, two in another. I had adopted them from the shelter two years ago, so they're at least two years old. very day or so, I would let them out of their cages- two at a time, not all 4 at once- so they could run around the room.

I know everyone says gerbils prefer to be kept as pairs, but about 2 months ago, one of one pair died. The other pair started fighting the last 2 times I put them back in their cage after their free time in the room. So now all 3 have separate cages.

They seem happy living alone, and I still give them individual time out of the cage. Should I try to get two of them to live together? (I know about the "split-cage" method, where you put a divider in the cage, and the two gerbils can live next to each other and get used to each other on opposite sides of the cage divider without being able to fight and hurt each other.)
