The coal cinders from the railroad have been there for scores, at least since the first run of the Virginia Creeper steam engine, the byproducts leaching into streams as run-off. I am not aware that dirt (the debris of organic decomposition and minerals) is unhealthy for free running bodies of water.

The waters of this area have endured and still endure the assault of far worse pollutants. Aside from the bygone years of raw sewage dumping and the somewhat controlled industrial chemical releases, there remains the creekside toxic artery known as State Highway 58, a far worse threat than primping the Creeper Trail for recreational use.
