When Summer says, "Don't follow tradition if it does not contain reason." Letting alone the question of whether 'tradition' contains 'reasons' or not, Summer is at best telling the partial truth, and partial truth is usually misleading! Yes, bad tradition should be abolished, but good tradition should be preserved. Grad. Dinner is good tradition, as it is widely chosen by most graduates in most schools.

“Everyone has freedom to choose to do or not to do something and how to do it."
That statement is not universal truth. For instance, you have no freedom/right to choose idling all you life, relying on social welfare assistance. In the context of the Grad. dinner, the statement does not imply that 90 students should choose 90 different ways to express their gratitude to teachers. Mr Summer should learn something about public choice in the study of political science at elementary level. We are living in a community of many individuals. The rule of majority is so far a generally accepted principle to resolve problems of social choice.

Summer again says,"Be a logical man!" But logic is not everything. Mr Summer, do you place any value on virtues such as consideration, friendship, cooperation, and sacrifice?

政治科學中,學者認為"有多數中產的社會"才會是一個適合政府生存的社會
反過來說,一個人民沒有資產的地方,政府會有很大的麻煩
為什麼?
因為,政府出現的最初原因,是有一班有財產的人,擔心生命財產受威脅,就互相做一個協議,形成政府,故政府亦是大部份人的意願
另外,政府講求的是legitimacy(認受性),即是說政府本沒有其自身的必然,而是眾多獨立個體做成獨立決定的合成物
對於不認受的人民,有資產者為了保障自身一伙的生命財產,在不能說服所有人認受之下,就要用武力所為最後的backup
所以,世界有至少3種人,1.承認政府的人 2.不承認而uprise的人
3.不承認,但礙於武力,在自身勢弱,防止危險的利害衡量下而接受,就如人做任何決定時以利害作衡量一樣
