Regarding Hastings TG552, I have described this crashed Hastings many times as the Hastings aircraft that lost its wing on landing. As a National Serviceman I was a passenger in the next Hastings to land at Negombo and if I remember correctly one of the wings of the crashed aircraft had broken off and moved in a direction away from the aircraft and then caught fire. I always thought that the passengers in the crashed aircraft included servicemen from the the Airborne regiment, some of whom we had met in the other ranks mess at Karachi. At eighteen years old it was a fantastic experience to fly from the UK to Kia Tak (the last leg in a Dakota). I take this opportunity to thank all you aircrew and maintenance types for the safe flying journeys that I made as a passenger.

Hi David
One lucky guy eh? Interesting to note on this incident that the aircraft accident record card has gone missing (along with others!) but that is the easiest way to cover-up the real truth, unless of course you find an aircrew member who was actually on board and is able to tell the truth, which we have!

Hello David,
My Dad flew out to Negombo on Hastings TG552. It was on its next flight out that it crashed.
My father became a 'Leading Aircraftsman' at Negombo and was, therefore, able to take the photos that John has so kindly put on this site.
(Dad's name was David, too.)
Best wishes
Tricia.
