Subject: 205/209 sqdns.. Activity in Korean War. 1950/51

Aat the start of the Korean War in 1950, a detachment of Sunderlands left Seletar and were finally based at Iwakuni in Japan. Working with the Americans we were required to carry out Radar searches of the sea areas covering the east and west coasts of Korea. AS an Air Radar Technician I and others were to fly on on these sorties in order to maintain servicabliity of the Search equipment. My query now is as follow;- how is it that the RAF Records Office have no knowledge of Sunderlands being on active service during the Korean campaign?

Frank, it is hard to believe that they know nothing of this. I have copies of the Operational Record Book (RAF F540) for mid-1950 for 209 Sqn which gives very clear details of the start of these operations. Those records are held now by the Public Record Office at Kew.

You can also refer them to the History section of the main MOD website which records some details of 205/209 Sqn's Sunderland's involvement in the Korean War.
