I've often been asked about netscape, but only had experience with it on a Mac (Linux based system), & on Linux. In those cases, I rated it "good enough".
Well, I just finished testing & researching netscape's 7.0 all the way to beta testing 8.0 for Windows last week. In Windows all the versions of Netscape installed AOL's AIM spyware, & Weatherbug's spyware. AOL's netscape installed AOL's highly intrusive, bandwidth, & resource hungry spyware & trackers, along with their own versions of DRM (digital rights management), used to keep track of everything you see, read, hear, download, or upload... for RIAA, MPAA, Government, & AOL staff viewing.
In all versions, the few good aspects of the software were clearly either borrowed or stolen from Mozilla Firfox. I must give netscape for Windows a VERY BIG THUMBS DOWN!
Due to the crap mentioned above, I'd even highly RECOMMEND MS Explorer over Netscape. Explorer may have some security holes, but netscape deliberately installs most of the stuff you want to keep out & off your computer. Most of that stuff could be exploited much easier than Explorer holes.
With the easy installation of analogX's Cookie Wall, Grisoft's AVG, AdawareSE, & Spybot S & D, MS's explorer is a far superior, secure, & private product than any available version of netscape for windows. So if you're unsure about Firefox, because portions of a few sites may not work well with it, stick with a well protected Explorer & avoid Netscape at ALL costs. AMF use both FireFox & Explorer simutaniously in several windows if you like. It works quite well. I get Firefox as my defalt browser for most intenet activities, & the few places I may have a problem, like my bank, I just click on Explorer for.
I cannot & will not recommend Netscape to any windows user for any reason. Steer clear, do not download! Do not use!!!
If you try to uninstall netscape or it's spyware, the most offensive & intrusive parts of the software WILL NOT be removed & remain active. You have to manually search & remove the offending wares one by one. Even then, some of it will refuse to be removed, now claiming it's part of your OS, as it has permanently made itself part of windows without your permission or knowledge.
In Linux, netscape tried to install the same types or spying & tracking devices, but my linux did not install those parts. However, I surf 5-10 times faster on broadband with Firefox in Linux, so I must assume there's something running (or keeps trying to run) in Netscape on Linux in the background that I don't want & haven't discovered yet. I'm still pretty new at Linux, but have mastered it just enough to happily use it almost half the time my computers are on (separate drives & boots).
I'm not quite a MS or explorer fan, but after a complete & thorough investigation & real testing of netscape, Explorer beats AOL's malicous netscape any day!
AMF because of putting AOL's netscape on one of my windows XP drives, I must now overwrite the entire drive with ones & zeros, reformat, & do a new, clean install. I kept an open mind, & now declare netscape for Windows the absolutely worst browser in the world... by a landslide!
