Sure, studying the 2 dead dust balls, the moon & mars, are important to understanding our almost infinitely small (compared to the universe(s)) part of the solar system. Our solar system is only a tiny speck of sand among only 1 galaxy containing billions of suns. Our galaxy is only one of billions of galaxies we know of, and the Hubble space telescope is discovering millions more galaxies every year. It turns out, although we can't see them, there are other universes... maybe a few of them, maybe an infinite number of universes.
But even if we were capable of sending people to the moon & mars today, the science & tools they would use are already being done by our current robotic missions. Sending people there would be an expensive & risky mission at the expense of taxpayers, & real science. Plus funding for programs we really need on earth have been severely cut or cancelled. Such manned missions would cut even more programs, & a lot more good science.
Manned missions to the moon or mars would not be scientific missions, but missions of glory & propaganda... politically motivated. Essentially, galloping cowboys to the moon & mars to plant a flag... like we did in Iraq.
As a science, astronomy, & sci-fi nut, I think it would be great to send people there, but it's just not practicle or possible without sacrificing too much. We have too many other priorities to cover first.
With our current scientific missions we're exploring physics, space, time, the edge of the universe, black holes, galaxies, warps, worm holes, dark energy, dark matter. We've just discovered the speed of light, long thought to be fixed, varies over time.
The population is increasing dangerously. The planet is becoming polluted, & damaged. Resources & energy are running low. We're driving plants, animals, our entire ecosystem, & ourselves to extinction.
If we don't advance our knowledge, & learn to master physics, our evolution will stagnate, & we will go the way of the dinosaurs.
Cleaner energy, better food production, better waste management, ecology, & better medicine all depend on knowledge. We are a self-taught society. Nobody & no god taught us. We learned & discovered by ourselves. History has shown our large brains are what allowed our fragile beings to survive, & our foolish ingnorance has only destroyed. If we left science to the gods, we'd still think the earth is flat, the center of the universe, be herding sheep 'till we die at the ripe old age of 30 or 40, only half our children would grow up to be a teen, & would still be torturing & burning people at the stake.
The tree of knowledge was only the knowledge of good & evil. Knowledge itself is not evil, ignorance is. Knowlege & wisdom will be our salvation. We should learn all we can to survive... that's how we always survived.
Let's turn back the way-back machine to the Apollo moon missions. It was a race against our rivals... to plant a flag... A great accomplishment for the U.S. that got world-wide praise. But no real science was done. All the discoveries made by Apollo, were already discovered by previous robotic missions. That's why Apollo was cut short, & people never went back. Society, nasa, & the government got bored with it... there was nothing new to learn. We just discovered ice in a few craters on the poles of the moon, but we didn't have to send people there to find out, & the robotic mission didn't have to land there.
We've learned thousands of times more from each of the Voyager missions, & millions of times more from the Hubble Space Telescope than any manned mission anywhere in space.
If we can master energy & physics first, going to the moon or mars will then be very easy. Let's learn what we should first through Hubble & other missions, then later we can send cowboys galloping to a couple of dust balls. The moon & mars aren't going anywhere, & there's no danger of somebody else getting there first in our lifetime.
To make things worse, the cowboys are now talking about cancelling elections in the name of homeland security, so they never have to leave power. But that's another thread. Don't let them do it. They already stole the election once, in a democracy, we shouldn't let it happen again.
Never give up the liberties of this great country for security. Communist China is very secure, but nobody's happy about it there.
The old saying goes, "Give me liberty or give me death".
This country was founded on the basis that we would rather die than give up our & our children's freedom. But homeland security says it's OK to give up freedom for security. How many Americans died to be free? Now they want to re-write the constitution & the constitutions for all 50 states to cancel elections. Elections never had to be cancelled because of war before. My god man! Don't let these people cancel America & freedom!!!
