Europe, Canada and Mexico Opposed to Spread of Democracy by U.S.

Recent AP poll results show that a majority of people in Britain, France, Germany, Italy Mexico and South Korea and Spain do not believe that the United States’ role should be to spread Democracy throughout the world. An AP-Ipsos poll also found that the majority of Canadians responded that they did not believe the US should attempt to spread democratic governments to other countries.

Michael Mandelbaum, professor of European studies at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, offered the explanation: "There's still wariness and resentment of the United States in general." In Brussels yesterday, President Bush reiterated the theme of his Inaugural address when he stated: "This strategy is not American strategy, or European strategy, or Western strategy. Spreading liberty for the sake of peace is the cause of all mankind."

Don Bartlett, White House counselor, appearing on ABC’s “Good Morning America” Tuesday said: "People get in their mind that spreading freedom means war and that's not the case. Some of those opinion polls are reading in to it a little more than what President Bush intends."

Not surprisingly, the greatest resistance to the US promotion of democracy worldwide came from France where 84% of those polled said that the US should not be at the forefront of any democratic push.
