CBS airs photographs of Iraqi prisoners abused by U.S
(from a local WNY board)
this is really fucked up. could you imagine if these pictures had male soldiers standing in front of naked women? weird shit. i could only imagine the pictures that haven't become public yet...

you know they'll end up blaming THAT kind of behavior on Howard Stern and Marilyn Manson...

theyre not being tortured, they're bein' lib'rated

a bit of a reprise here:
my first thought, looking at those pictures, was "are sure those are real?"
i so don't want to believe they are. do you have any evidence that they are?
but then i think about what sort of people are serving this country -- normal people! -- and i think about the circumstances they're under, and i realize, hell, there have to be worse things than that that happened. it's pretty fucking sickening....in a very literal sense.
===============
well, they are real. but, certainly not a representation of our soldiers who are fighting for this country.
Quote:
Now, an Army general and her command staff may face the end of long military careers. And six soldiers are facing court martial in Iraq -- and possible prison time.
Quote:
It was American soldiers serving as military police at Abu Ghraib who took these pictures. The investigation started when one soldier got them from a friend, and gave them to his commanders. 60 Minutes II has a dozen of these pictures, and there are many more – pictures that show Americans, men and women in military uniforms, posing with naked Iraqi prisoners.
There are shots of the prisoners stacked in a pyramid, one with a slur written on his skin in English.
In some, the male prisoners are positioned to simulate sex with each other. And in most of the pictures, the Americans are laughing, posing, pointing, or giving the camera a thumbs-up.

Oh, man. I sort of regret looking at those. I literally feel a little sick.
Before the "you guys just HATE America" and "that's nothing compared to what Saddam did to them" comments begin, lemme just say that I'm sure this goes on in every country where there are POWs. But...fuck. That's horrible, and I don't want to think about the stuff that isn't public.
I'm going to stop before I get all sappy and Garbaz on you but I really fucking pray for the human race. Look at what we do to each other. Look at the evil that war instills in an otherwise "normal" soldier. Yeah, that's "liberating" the people, for sure.
I mean, god help us, really.

Stanley Milgram had a couple of studies on human cruelty in the 60's that were in response to questions that arose from holocaust trials. Milgram wanted to know if it was possible for all people to exhibit cruelty when given authority and control over others. I thought that it was interesting reading, but I was kind of a sociology dork in college. Maybe that goes with the tree hugging, liberal, commmie, pinko thing.
One study set up a scenario in which two actors played the role of student and professor, and the subject was asked to participate in a mock learning exercise involving electric shock. In the 65% of cases, normal people were easily driven to deliver what they thought were shocks of up to 450 volts to another person based on the instruction of the professor (all the while the student is delivering fake screams from the other room).
In the end, (as much as we all hate to admit it) cruelty a behavior that many people are capable of and willing to exhibit in the right conditions. Avoiding it depends greatly on leadership.
