The Bush administration would like us all to believe the rush to invade Iraq has made America a safer place. The truth is that we are now at more risk than ever before and the potential for major attacks have increased.

The forces we now face in Iraq are a mixture of al-Qaida, Taliban, Saudi extremist and untold other extremist. Prior to this administration's rush to war, Iraq was confined and under constant surveillance, with a dictator basically without power outside of Iraq. Yes, he was a threat to his own people, but that is no excuse to invade a country and depose its leader.

Saddam Hussein was no friend of democracy, but he also was no real threat to American lives. Al-Qaida and its leader Osama bin Laden was our greatest threat. Now all of the extremist have joined forces against our troops. More Americans die every day with no end in sight. And I believe the leaders of this new extremist coalition are sitting in their lairs planning how to best hit us on our home turf. Will it happen on Nov. 2, Election Day? Who knows, but I do believe it will happen and soon.

This world is a lot smaller place than it was 25 years ago, and America, as the world's greatest power, has an enormous responsibility. That responsibility includes doing our best to work with other world leaders to make this world as safe as possible for every man, woman and child. Our best chance of doing this was squandered by President Bush when he decided its time for America to stop terrorism without U.N. backing and support, when we had the world's sympathy after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. It is our obligation to the free world to include them in this endeavor, because President Bush's actions will and have effected the whole world - in Spain, Russia, Israel, as well as the whole of the Middle East, and soon in this country. These effects have included lives that were cut short by a shortsighted, stubborn vision of ultraconservative moral grandeur.

They say America is safer, but how many car bombs could be made from just one 20-foot container from a ship, how many newly recruited extremist have entered this country under the student visa program or through our leaking borders, and how many misguided Americans are willing to do harm to the people of this country in the name of jihad?

A safer America can only be achieved by working towards a safer world. And that job must include the world for it to happen.

President Bush has admitted he made "miscalculations." I believe that was in thinking his views of right and wrong were justification to topple a country. His miscalculations have started a war that will spread throughout the world and divide its people, making America and the rest of the world a battlefield. And battlefields are not a safe place.
