The only time I "hold" a spot for a client is if she gives me a definite return date. Then I tell other clients who may be "using" her spot, that this appt slot is only available on a temp basis, and they will have to relinquish it on such and such date.

If a "leaving" client cannot give me a return date, then I make sure to let her know that other clients have been salivating as they wait for her prime spot to open up for them to take! I try and phrase it jokingly... such as "I sure am going to miss you, but Sharon is going to want to kiss you for giving up this standing appt slot, she's been after me for 6 months to get her a standing Thurs 5 pm 'casue she's not 100% happy with the standing Tuesday at 7 that she currently has, and poor Jody is going to be thrillled to get Sharon's slot, 'cause she's been "floating" from appt to appt waiting for an evening standing ever since she had to give up her day time slot and "wait list" for nites since she went back to work!" That type of conversation makes it clear to the client that her spot will definetly NOT be waiting for her should she decide to return!!!!
