In reply to: Sherri 's message, "kids ina salon" on 09:48:06 06/25/99 Fri

A while back I adopted a "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em philosophy when it comes to kids".... Most of my clients would rather cut off an arm (well, no that would involve their fingernails then, so maybe they'd give up some other body part :-)... anyway, they moslty HATE to bring their kids, and only do because the other choice would be to reschedule. Since my book is FULL and I never have any "spare" openings (especially for eve slots, which is when they'd be looking to re-book into for after their husbands get home) I've learned to "make the best of" the situation. I have a kids area with a TV, VCR, nintendo, microwave, and a futon. Plus a basket of toys and coloring books, etc. Most kids seem pretty content to stay there (it's right in the moms line of sight, kind of behind me and off to the side), and it has "boundries" for the kids to stay in defined by the area rug.

The space has come in pretty handy for me as well, when I've had a sick child home from school. With 3 kids it seems like I've got at least one sick once a week from Jan thru Easter Ughhhhh! :-(

BUT and this is a big but... I still make it known to clients that having a child in the salon is not a matter of choice (for me or them) it is a metter of LAST resort! They appreciate that when I am there w/ child that the only other alternative would have been to CANCEL and reschedule their appt, and vise-versa for them! My clients know that they should CALL first to mention that they will have to bring a child with them to the appt. so that I can have the option of rescheduling them if possible.

They know that when they bring a child with that I can not give their nails 100% of my attention as one eye (and part of my attention) will always be on the child and the childs safety (kids are soooo quick, one second they are fine, the next they are running with scissors!). A sign that says something to that effect can be very helpful as most women don't like to sacrifice any quality on their nails if they can help it!
