I tell them that I will put them on the "list" to get whatever spot it is they want. That goes for now, when they are current as well, when they want to switch standing times, I let them know that as soon as something opens up I will let them change.

You need to start reinforcing the idea that you are booked heavily beforte they leave, so then when they come back, if they are mad, they "should" understand that it's not your fault, and that someone else on the list took their spot!
