For sure brine...rubs just don't do the fish justice.
I add a touch of Sweet Basil and Mango juice to the brine...what the heck..makes it yummy.

I use a mix of Alder (always), and fruitwood. I tend to use cherry a lot...burning a pan of alder, then one of cherry. That sawdust stuff from LJ is not as fresh as others I have had. Of course, the cherry is always fresh.
