The Food Network sent me a preview tape of three new programs it will air on Sunday, June 9. Each program is an hour long. The first is "Emeril's Hawaiian Barbecue" and, as you might expect, it has nothing whatsoever to do with barbecue. He's really talking about outdoor cooking. This program is actually more of a travel show than a cooking show. Emeril is on location in Hawaii and some of the places he visits are mildly interesting. But after he's through hopping around the Big Island there's no time to cook so he rushes through the recipe and demo part of the program. The whole thing's a bit disappointing. We don't even see much of Emeril's usual humor and charisma.

The second program on the bill is "Al Roker's Big Bad Barbecue Special." This show is lame, folks. It's one long commerical for his new book of the same name. Now, I'm actually quite sympathetic to his desire to sell books. I've got a book I'd like to sell a few more copies of. But this is the FOOD Network. Not the Book Network. The show spends more time explaining how Al picked his wardrobe for the book's photography than it does providing viewers with recipes or cooking insights.

There is brief and superficial mention of the American Royal Barbecue, but it only leaves real barbecuers frustrated to see more.

The final program in this threesome is "The U.S. Barbecue Championship" which is a nice start-to-finish treatment of last year's event in Shreveport. Our own Fast Eddy gets lots of deserved air-time. He comes off as cool, calm, collected and very knowledgable. For seasoned veterans of the competitive circuit, for wet-behind-the-ears newbies, or for curious food enthusiasts this program in worth the watch.
