Hi Gerry, to be completly honest with you, I`m not sure you can compare the two, YES!, they are both smoker/cookers but they are dissimilar in every other fashion.
The Weber Smokey Mountain would have to be compared to the mecca or the brinkman water smokers you might find at Canadian Tire or Home Depot, they are both metal 'bullet' style cookers.
To them I say the Weber Smokey Mountain is superior.

A metal cooker and a ceramic cooker are worlds apart and it all depends what you want from the cooker you choose.

Several parameters should be considered:, does is have to be mobile?, do I need to cook in the cold months?, do I want to do overnight cooks for butts and briskets etc?, how much room do I need?, things like that...

I cook on three ceramic cookers and a metal cooker, I love them all.
Now having said that, come late fall, the metal one goes into hibernation merely because mine so so fuel INefficiant.

I can only speak for the ceramic cookers as I have only used a weber smokey mountain for a weekend before I bought my egg.

The ceramic is a stand-alone cooker in our Canadian winters, there is absolutly NO doubt about that, you can put a butt into the egg with an established fire before you go to bed and wake to the same temp you went to bed at to a perfectly cooked chunk of meat, rain, snow wind or whatever...thats why I bought mine.

Yes, they are heavy and brittle but they arn`t meant to be used as a hammer.
As well, they are expensive but once you get the hang of fire control you will be amazed how well these things work.
If you ever want to see a ceramic cooker in action, gimme a call and pop over...

I`m probably the first guy to call a spade a spade and if for any reason this cooker I bought failed in any way shape or form, I would be the first to admit it....its a good cooker...and its guarenteed for life.

If I were to buy another metal cooker (and I am), It is going to be the 22" Weber Kettle, they are a good machine for the money....
