morning Barry. is your smoker a Brinkman by any chance ? there are some mods you can do to help with fire control. to keep a good clean burning fire you need to get controlled air to the coals, you also have to have an area below the coals for the ash to collect so the coals don't get smothered.
after that is done there is a need to exhaust some of the smoke and hot air to keep up a good circulation around the food you are cooking. the exhaust also helps to keep down creosote buildup and tainting your food.
