Well, I`m going to jump in on this one as one who uses both, briquettes and lump.

In think it ALL depends on the cooker that you are using the fuel in.

In my Smoke'N'Pit if I used lump I would never be able to maintain heat at a low temp as well as briquettes cause the air leaking around the door and other areas would accelerate the lump to a hight temp, short cook time.
So in that cooker I use briquettes...They work best for me there.

I also cook with an extremely effient ceramic cooker that leaks no unwanted air and in that I use lump.

Lump charcoal is almost PURE carbon and leaves VERY little ash, almost none where briquettes leave a rediculous amout of ash, almost more than what you started with LOL, not to mention the fillers and crap thats in the make-up of the briquettes.

So in a nutshell each fuel has its place.

Most of the people that use the WSM prefer briquettes and it works well in that cooker...very well...like I said, it has its place in certain applications...

To use lump charcoal you have to be able to control the air intake to within a 'wisp' of air if you want to maintain low and slow cooks, if you can do that then lump is far superior in its cleanliness...
