Keith, I have an offset smoker I built last year and am building a mobile pit now. They both have an upright also. The fresh air intake to the firebox is adjustable, there is a formula, just can't remember it. The opening between the firebox and cooking chamber is a half moon shaped cutout,it's a bit less than half the area of the pipe end. The heat entering the cooking chamber is evenly distributed by baffle plates placed under the grill. Because mine also has an upright cooking chamber there is another half moon
cutout between the horizontal and the vertical cooking chamber. The exhaust stack exits from the vertical. It is 6" pipe. There is also a formula for the exhaust size. I will try and find it for you. A longer length of exhaust will give you a better draft but too long a length is also a bad thing. These are two websites with lots of pics and details. http://communities.msn.com/KloseBBQPitOwnersCommunity/_whatsnew.msnw

I think you have to join the first one to view the pictures.
Hope this helps.
