The other kids raced around shrieking and playing, oblivious to Maureen and me. Somehow we'd captured each others attention. I was 12 years old and she just a few months older. I'd never really had any interest in girls before and this made me more than a little nervous. I'm not sure if I was conscience of blushing when she smiled at me but looking back now I can almost feel my cheeks burning.
Maureen had come to town from Wisconsin with her parents to visit her aunt, her uncle and her cousins. They only expected to stay around ten days. Four days had passed since they arrived but I just met her the first time not more than an hour before. Her cousins lived on the next block and I was just passing by when saw the group of kids and a few familiar faces out playing.
Chris, Maureen's first cousin on her mothers side invited me to come and play for a bit. After one look at Maureen there was no way I was not staying. We were playing a tag type of hide and seek hybrid game but there was no real organization or rules, just a lot of chasing around and laughing. The kids ranged in age from Chris's 5 year old brother to Dean, a 14 year old from down the street the other way, no relation to anyone else here.
In all the confusion and kids all about Maureen gave me a flirtatious wink and ran around the side of the house. The cedar fence stopped her cold and I caught her there, put my hands around her waist from behind when she suddenly spun around in my grasp and with a fluid catlike agility kissed me.
I was stunned. I remember how I felt to this day, struck dump as though a lightning bolt had shot from the sky and froze me where I stood. The rest of the world ceased to exist. The kiss hadn't lasted more than a fraction of a second but its effects caused time to stand still.
No sound, no other sight but her, she took my hand, opened the gate and we walked through. I was completely under her spell and if we said anything I don't remember. She led me to the old tree forte at the back of the lot. We both climbed the old rope through the opening in the floor of the deck positioned high up between the forks of the branches. It wasn't large but there was plenty of room for us to sit side by side and stay hidden from any unwanted onlookers.
From that point there was some awkward kissing and groping, my lips pushed too hard to hers, her tongue making an occasional soiree into my mouth. My heart pounded, my skin burned, my hands gliding carefully across her shoulders, arms and back. I didn't dare touch her inappropriately. I was much to much a gentleman for that.
After a moment she suddenly stopped, looked up to me with her blue eyes and asked with a seriousness worthy of any life altering event, "Are we going to get married?"
I wasn't real sure on how to react, this was a much bigger step than I was prepared to take at this point in my life. But in all fairness to the gravity of her question and the overwhelming desire to make her happy I replied "Yes!"
Apparently satisfied with my answer her eyes became playful again, she jumped through the opening in the floor. I followed without another thought and we rejoined the other kids still playing in the front yard who had apparently taken no notice of our absence.
I only saw her one more time before she returned with her parents to Wisconsin. I wondered if she even remembered that one stolen moment that had altered my life so completely by the way she took so little notice of me, but at the last second, with just a glimpse and a smile, as she turned to run and play with her cousins, she reassured me that it had indeed been real, very real, and one day, with any luck...
