One unselfish character in this novel is Pulcheria. She does things for her family(son and daughter). For instance she came all that way to visit Ras and to see how he was doing. Also she is allowing her daughter to marry a rich doctor although she isn't too fond of him. She makes these sacrifices to look out for the well being of her children. She knows that Ras isn't doing so great financially, so she figures that will be a way to help him. There are many opportunity costs when it comes to these sacrifices. They are heroic in some ways, but also foolish at the same time. Heroic, because she looks at it as a way to save her family from their struggle, and she knows that Dounia will be happy. It is foolish because she is basically allowing her daughter to sell herself to the doctor, who she admitted to be rude. All of the is true, but you gotta do what you gotta do to get by.
