Miss Oktoberfest 2002

PPP 2002 Miss United States of America

Winning the title of Miss Oktoberfest in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, Canada was the most exciting experience! From the time I arrived along with the rest of the contestants, we were all made to feel very welcome and special. The Oktoberfest pageant committee is one of the most fine-tuned organizations I have ever had the privilege to be involved with. All of the pre-pageant activities throughout the week right through the night of the pageant ran like clockwork. Everyday we were busy with rehearsals, and public appearances, meeting the sponsors.... we were on the go pretty much of the time..but we did have some free time for shopping in near-by St. Jacobs! All of us were treated royally throughout the time we were there...we all felt like winners even before the competition began! The pageant committee and the people of Kitchener-Waterloo showed us all the true meaning of gemutlichikeit?. Miss Oktoberfest pageant is more than a pageant, it is a Main Event....televised throughout Canada, with over 2,000 people in attendance was absolutely awesome. From the live performances on stage by the Bo Jangle Dancers to Jaime Warren, Canada?s country-western singer, it was first class all the way!! The competition started with interviews, and talent performance. I performed ballet to upbeat music of ?Stars and Stripes?. These events took place prior to the final night of competition. The night of televised competition, we competed in evening gown and swimwear. I was thrilled to have won the ?Swimsuit? Award and I select for the announcement of the top 5, I think we all had butterflies! I was elated to hear ?Miss Georgia?
called for the top five! The tension was mounting but the excitement as well! Each of us were called to the microphone to speak on any topic we chose...how we handled ourselves was very important, since the new Miss Oktoberfest would be making over 100 appearances over the next two (2) weeks. Shortly thereafter, the tabulations were given to Stacey Lehman, the mistress of ceremonies and we all held hands waiting for the announcement! AS I view the tape, I really do not remember what was going through my mind at the time...it went all so fast....4th, 3rd, 2nd runner-ups and then Miss Delaware and Miss Georgia left...with the announcement of Miss Delaware, first runner-up, I was stunned!! Karen Long, Miss West Virginia, Mss Oktoberfest 2001 placed the banner and crown on me! Only the beginning of a week to follow packed with appearances and visits to local schools speaking at 22 schools, retirement homes, Business Clubs, appearances at all he festhalles, and presiding over all the sports tournaments during the week. I had a beautiful float for Miss Oktoberfest for the Thanksgiving Day Parade. Hundreds of well wishers filled the street for this spectacular Parade.
