Subject: We're in Penang now!

We decided to vacate the big city for the super touristy island of "Penang". We don't seem to be getting any of the funny looks that we got in Kuala Lumpur, we blend right in with all the tourists here! ;) (In Kuala Lumpur we were getting a little *too* much attention. Cars were often honking, and guys on scooters were always waving and grinning, sometimes saying things. Sometimes it was amusing, but it could get kind of disconcerting)

The beach in Penang is so beautiful! We're staying in a little guest house right on the beach, for $9 each a night. We've figured out that we can live quite comfortably here for $14 a day, including food and accomodation! We spent the evening laying on the beach just outside of a nice beach cafe/bar... we soaked up the ambience, but didn't pay the cash! ;) They were playing music which normally would have seemed really cheesy, but somehow seemed to work in context. Dad, you would have liked their cover of Dire Straights, "Walk of Life". ;)
the bus ride here was about 6 hours (2 hours longer than the girl at the ticket desk told us, but we had our suspicions). The bus terminal in Kuala Lumpur was CRAZY!! Tons of booths selling tickets, and all the sellers were yelling and waving their hands the whole time. It was so hard to breath in there, because the busses were all running on the floor below us, and the air was full of fumes. We were quite overwhelmed at first!

Yesterday we had an interesting day in Kuala Lumpur, we walked around SO much! It's amazing how much of that city you can cover on foot. We saw this HUGE outdoor bird park (which you were telling us about mom), and it looked really cool. Basically it was a big chunk of forest covered over with netting. We didn't go in though, as it cost too much money :( We did however pay 40 cents each to see the orchid and hybiscus gardens, which were beautiful!

We walked around so much, and yet have been eating relatively little. (not little compared to most people, just little compared to our massive appetites we have at home!) We think the heat curbs the hunger. We've sure been drinking lots of water though.

At the end of the day (after about 7 hours) of walking, we had the fortune to find ourselves in the middle of a monsoon! They just come out of nowhere, with no warning but a huge MASSIVE burst of thunder. A couple times the thunder sounded like machine guns going off right beside our ears. Mom, we think you should lodge a complaint with the makers of our emergency ponchos! They kept our packpacks dry, but didn't do much for the rest of us! We eventually just gave up and waited it out under cover like the rest of the locals. It's interesting, people are always rushing around so much, but the minute those rains start, they seem content to wait it out. I guess they know there is no point in trying to fight it.

We're off now to walk around and enjoy some more of this beautiful evening. Love to all!

Sarah and Nomi
