I wrote the following in my journal and figured I might as well cross-post it here :)

It's beautiful here, but I am still feeling a little unhappy about having to leave Malaysia before I was ready. Our last 2 days in Kuala Lumpur were so memorable. We met some random friendly guys on the street on the 18th, and went out dancing with them. This led us to discover that "Ladies Night" in Kuala Lumpur doesn't mean just one free drink... it means free drinks all night long! We had a great time dancing.

The next day we met up again with Aried (a local guy we had met the night before). He's always out in Chinatown in the evenings busking, so he's easy to find. He was an interesting fellow. He's a student at an animation school, a busker in the evening, and somehow finds time to work at a stall painting cool souvineers too. Walking around town with him he knew so many people, it gave us a chance to meet a lot of locals. It was such a great experience hanging out with the local guys, they are such fun people. We hung out with him and friends until early in the morning.

It was entertaining talking to Aried, he had some interesting theories on things. For example, he told us the "thirteen ways to tell if a girl is a virgin". Apparently he learned it when he was studying psychology at an Islamic University. He was also telling us how to tell the name of your husband by the wrinkles on your thumb. Some strange theories to say the least... hehe. I have no idea how much of it he was making up, and how much he had actually been told by others.

The next day (which was our last in Kuala Lumpur) Aried told us to meet him at work in the afternoon. He surprised us with personalized souvineers that he painted for us... and then he took us out to experience some authentic Malaysian food. (he also gave me his harmonica and made me promise to learn... hehe... now I've got something to do in the outback! ;) We spent out last day in Malaysia hanging out with him and his co-workers and friends, talking and laughing... it was so hard to leave to go to the airport! :(

Maybe it's good that I got out of Malaysia when I did, what with this war going on. I was impressed by what I saw of Kuala Lumpur's attitude towards war. I thought they would be pissed off and angry, but instead I saw all sorts of banners and t-shirts about finding peace. We met a girl at the airport who had flown over Iraq while on her way to New Zealand from Britain... that must have been disconcerting.

I don't really know what to do now that I'm in New Zealand. In Asia it was easy to spend the days just walking around absorbing the atmosphere and how different everything is. I'm sure I'll figure it out in time, everybody always says how much they love New Zealand, I'm sure I will too. Maybe I just need to get out of the city.
