Licensee details

Provides credit/debit/EFTPOS network to the banks.

Smart card scheme name

Evolution of scheme
- Pilot in Arnhem, October 1995
- National Roll-Out since September 1996
- Terminal infrastructure adjusted to share with Chipper scheme in 1999
- Beginning of 2002 Chipper does not exist anymore as a separate scheme. Chipknip is now the only e-purse scheme on a national level.
- 1 Jan. 2002: Launch of Prepaid Chipknip: a Chipknip electronic purse containing a predetermined amount of credit and that is not linked to a particular person or account. When the denominated credit balance has been spent, the empty card cannot be topped-up again. A general governmental regulation had determined that cashless environments allowed the Dutch to set up cashless environments. Prepaid Chipknip was developed by Interpay and the Dutch banks at the request of the catering and carpark sector. Thus for example it was possible to start a cashless parking programme in Nijmegen, Pumerend and Rotterdam
- In 2002 transactions rose by 272 %, compared to 2001. For the reasons of this success, read the full story in our case study
