OPSM result raises eyebrows
26-February-2003
OPSM Group Limited (OPS) said today that early indications were that its second half trading would be good after posting a small fall in first half profit to $9.3 million. Analysts said the result was generally in line with the company’s previous guidance and on track to achieve full year forecasts.

Earnings before interest and tax and significant items rose to $16.0 million on revenues of $231 million compared to $11.6 million on revenues of $282.6 million in the previous corresponding period.

However, net profit fell from $10.1 million last year to $9.3 million thanks to a $3.0 million charge against a discontinued business, while last year’s result was boosted by a $3.6 million one-off.

Earnings per share for the half year were 6.9c after significant items and directors declared a full franked interim dividend of 5.5c, up from 5.0c last year.

OPSM’s managing director Jonathan Pinshaw said the result was underpinned by same store sales growth of 6% and strong profit growth in both its domestic and overseas businesses. He also said the group’s three-brand strategy was working well, presenting a more targeted offering to consumers.

"Looking ahead, the outlook is encouraging," he said. "Indications from trading early in the second half are good and I expect more of the same for this period."

"Beyond that, I anticipate profitability will continue to grow in upcoming years,” he concluded.

According to Multex Global, consensus analyst estimates are tipping OPSM to report a full year profit of $28.0 million before amortisation.

At 1130 AEST OPSM Group shares were trading 1c lower at $3.37.

Actually Petermo it is better than that I think my first purchase was 1992--I wasn't with Mrs Bonkers then I lived in a flat in Glebe--it was done on my own share account.
That was when they sent you the certificate in the mail before the present system was introduced------I used to pay at Westpac at Glebe the tellers were often curious about bonkers.
I told them that one day Westpac would hit $10.00---they didn't believe me.
I also told a Westpca Bank manager in 1994 the same thing----he wanted to know where I thought he could put his money to get a good return.
I said I prefer CBA but it'sd my view that Westpac will hit ten---I can't remeber what price they were then-----I think between 5 and 6.
Mrs Bonkers and I did another good one too---we bought ANZ at 4.12--it bottomed at 4.08-----I sold them at 5-----should I have kept them till today? (dont forget all the dividends we have missed out on)
Also I would like your advice on Boral I bought that in 1991-----should I have kept or sold? (I made a 1000 dollar profit-----using my credit card)
In jest----------Steve.
