Target Will Go National With Smart Card-Based Coupons

Minneapolis-based retailer Target Corp. today said it will expand the electronic couponing initiative linked to Target-issued Visa smart cards used by customers of the firm's 1,147 discount stores. Electronic coupons are the first and so far only chip-using service on the Visa card. "We began testing our smart chip technology by piloting the use of electronic coupons in several markets last quarter, and we expect to roll the program out to the entire chain later this year," Vice Chairman Gerald L. Storch said this morning at Target's fourth-quarter analysts' conference call. Target, the second-largest U.S. retail chain, indicated earlier that electronic coupons will be available for downloading onto the chips through in-store kiosks and online by consumers with smart card readers hooked to their home PCs. Target is converting its point-of-sale equipment at 37,000 checkout counters to read the card's chip. Storch says the Visa program, launched about 18 months ago, now has nearly nine million cards in circulation.
