The very nature of fanfic, especially "canon" type fanfic, dictates that we as writers be true to the events and characters. In AU, I still see writers being true to these things while taking liberties that seem to go with them, which I consider perfectly acceptable.

I agree as well. Don't take her comments too seriously. Disclaimers aside, I think we all recognize that borrowing dialogue or expanding it, and scenes from shows, is necessary to the writer's "take" on their version of the story, or the story they are spinning.

I admit there have been a few times when I've read something someone wrote that I thought really departed from the flavor of the characters or basic parameters of the show's format, ie, antiterrorism and what can be and is being done about it, and the interpersonal play between the characters. As long as the writer isn't pretending that the story is canon when it's not, or AU when it's not, I'm willing to give as much latitude as needed to validate the writer and the story.

I think that thoughtful commentary, be it positive or negative, is the most welcome. As soon as a commenter takes an offensive stand, they have alienated the writer and other readers. This type of person is only projecting their own anger and insecurity on the writer. If you believe in your work, stand by it.
