As for what one gains? Well - assuming everything works out - what ever it was you wanted.....

But what if what one wants is ideological and/or organizational as opposed to personal? I've known people committed to causes (political, religious) in just such a way. I think she was one of those people.


Certainly there have been people who were willing to sublimated their needs/concerns to that of an organization or cause they were committed to (nuns, suicide bombers, some political or social service workers) but in general, those decisions were made by people who were free to do so. It's more unusual (not impossible, just unusual) to find someone so thoroughly devoted to a cause they were kidnapped into.
