Subject: I'm very, very wary of OCs in general...(r)

and usually avoid reading stories with OCs as central characters, even though I know all of them are *not* Mary Sues/Gary Stus. I've had enough bad experiences, and to be very honest, I don't particularly care about OCs. Before I read, I would have to be convinced by someone whose taste I trust as to *why* I need to read about this character.

That said, are all OCs Mary Sues/Gary Stus? Definitely not. (Trust me, I wrote a Gary Stu once - he was a mysterious man who appeared every now and then to save the world; Voldemort was afraid of him; Harry liked him as much as Sirius; Dumbledore trusted him with Harry's life; he was a friend of MWPP. Thank God the HD died with everything in it!) A perfect example is the POTC fic ~delle recced some time ago - Norrington/OFC. The OFC was perky, smart and quite adorable - she had to be, because she had to match up to Elizabeth - and she even married the hero, but she certainly wasn't a Mary Sue. The trick, I guess, lies in not overdoing the characteristics, and not letting the OC steal the story from the main characters with his/her fabulousness.

Oh, and are we more tolerant of Mary Sue's male counterpart, Gary Stu? If we are, why is that? *g*

Nope. I can't tolerate either of the breed.
