I know quite a few mature writers (as in their age) that write Mary Sue stories. In their defense, many of them started writing fan fiction recently, simply because they loved LFN (or X-files, Trek, or whatever show they grew enamoured of). That makes them "beginners" whether they are 16 or 60.

Some people (MOST people) outgrow this stage--some don't. But that's okay--they can enjoy what they write and its fine with me. That's the nicety of the internet, you are free to pick and choose what you want to read and/or write.

I see Mary Sue stories like training wheels on a bike--they help us practice our writing and eventually, most of us learn to "ride" without them. :)
