Especially having chatted with Jaybee about it, I can thread my way to a series of "perfect storm" (great analogy by the way) circumstances in which for Madeline, at that point, killing herself was an assertion of control that works with her character as we came to know her.

I can also see the tragic elements (in the classical tragedy sense) that a fate she had meted out (although usually at Operation's behest and it wasn't always clear how she might have handled the situations in the absence of his orders) came back to bite her (or him, depending on your POV).

But, in general, I still think it was a stupid plot trick that undermined the elements of her character that I liked best, including as several pointed out - her resiliencey, her tendencies to have mulitple contingencies. and finally - and this one is proabably just IMO - her committment to the larger mission of Section itself.
