Yes, exactly. And in that sense one can see it as an assertion of pride and self-esteem, and thus in some ways even admirable.

I was never upset or annoyed at the suicide so much as the circumstances (that is, the mole scenario) that led to it. I was kind of proud of Madeline for giving Jones the finger, metaphorically, and for finding a way out that preserved her dignity. Begging and pleading that her life be spared, or even waiting to see what his decision would be, would have been beneath her.

But this all assumes she didn't have any other options, which I refuse to believe. *g*
