I would have been completely bewildered and offended and might very well have run screaming out of fandom altogether - timid lurker that I was. I didn't hate any of the characters (all of my issues with Operations arose much, much later - after the series was over even, and have everything to do with trying to write the stubborn SOB) and was baffled by those who were vocal about their dislike of some characters.

I still am, at some level, though I've long since grown acustomed to it. My own issues wrt Paul have helped of course! But poking around other fandoms, or reading fandom wank, and seeing the hate-on that *all kinds of people* carry for various HP characters just leaves me blinking in vague surprise. I recognize some degree of it as hyperbole, of course, but a lot really isn't.
