I agree with you about Nikita - to a point.

First off let me say, she's never been my favourite character, but I never, at least in my recollection, hated her. That being said, however, I think she was still naive, and I do think she clung to ideas that weren't possible in the long run. But, I do think she would have grown out of that fairly quickly.

I think they all started out pretty naive. Hell, I even believe that Paul and Madeline were, at some point. But I think they hit 'maturity' for lack of a better word, before they became leaders, Nikita hadn't quite gotten there yet. She would have, but I didn't think she was ready.

I would have liked to have seen her grow more - and maybe if S4 and S5 hadn't been....truncated? it wouldn't have seemed like she was thrown into it too early.
